Latin American and Latinx Studies

Latin American and Latinx Studies students at GVSU focus on studying the culture and civilizations of Latin American nations. In the process, students are taught to adopt a cultural frame that prepares them to travel, develop projects abroad, and make meaningful connections with counterparts in the countries that interest them most. Study abroad is the perfect vehicle for students wishing to get a head start on accomplishing these goals while still enrolled in college.

Latin American Studies

Mexico

As a Latin American and Latinx Studies minor, you already have the significant advantage of spending a few weeks, a semester, or even a year studying abroad in a Latin American country with a strong academic background in and knowledge of the culture. While taking in the imposing ruins of the Incan empire in Cuzco, Peru you will undoubtedly feel closer to Latin American culture than ever before. Perhaps you can see yourself giving a presentation in a Colombian classroom on Simon Bolivar’s crucial role in the Latin American struggle for independence from Spain. Or maybe you’ve always dreamt of taking in a seaside promenade with Dominican friends on the beaches of Santo Domingo.

Study abroad can help materialize the cultural frame you’ve adopted in your study of Latin America. It is the immersive experience that will transform your way of thinking about the world, strengthen your professional resume, and increase your confidence in cross-cultural situations. Hone your academic training in one of the countries that captured your imagination from the start. Whether it’s Brazil, Mexico, Nicaragua or Chile—you’ve quite the selection to choose from.
